Vertellus Morflex® 1129 (Dimethyl Isopthalate) to Enhance Improved Clarity, Flexibility and Strength in Polyesters

(March 14, 2018, Indianapolis, Ind., USA) —Vertellus is a leading global supplier of Morflex® 1129 (Dimethyl isopthalate, DMIP), an intermediate used in the synthesis of polyesters. Morflex® 1129 delivers strength, clarity, flexibility, good solvency and plasticization of polyesters.

Morflex® 1129 allows the manufacture of amorphous co-polyester elastomers used in automotive and consumer applications, supporting improved flexibility, low modulus and enhanced structural strength.

From a utilization perspective, Morflex® 1129 is increasingly being utilized for fibers, films and optical lens applications. It is used as a plasticizer or as an intermediate to increase the molecular weight of polyesters, contributing to enhanced mechanical and optical properties such as transparency.  Morflex 1129 also contributes to heat resistance and increased adhesion in PET & PEN type polyester films and laminating resins.

Morflex® 1129 serves as a key raw material for 5-Sulfo dimethyl isopthalate and in the manufacture of water soluble polyester resins. Some applications that source Morflex 1129 include textile film, metal, paper processing, paints and specialty inks.

From an innovation perspective, Morflex® 1129 offers potential applications across a breadth of industries such as automotive, consumer and industrial goods. Morflex® offers a key advantage in PET and PBT engineering thermoplastics by reducing the materials’ melting point and thus easing the processing of resins. This is achieved through reduced crystallization, which also helps improve flexibility, clarity and structural strength in polyester compounds. Other examples of potential applications for Morflex® 1129 include serving as a building block for increasing molecular weight and flexibility in recycled polyester and unsaturated polyesters.

“Vertellus is excited about the possibilities Morflex® 1129 brings to manufacturers and formulators of polyesters across a wide range of sectors,” said Prasad Taranekar, marketing manager at Vertellus. “This technology is presenting new options for manufacturers of both virgin and recycled polyesters.”

Morflex® 150 (Dicyclohexyl Phthalate, DCHP) by Vertellus Offers Performance, Value and Versatility Across a Breadth of Applications

Morflex® 150 (Dicyclohexyl Phthalate, DCHP) by Vertellus Offers Performance, Value and Versatility Across a Breadth of Applications

(March 1, 2018, Indianapolis, Ind., USA) —Morflex® 150 (Dicyclohexyl Phthalate, DCHP), manufactured by Vertellus, delivers performance, value and versatility to support a breadth of targeted applications ranging from heat-sealed food and drug labels to acrylic-based coatings used on airport runways. DCHP is engineered in a manner that supports its use as a plasticizer and as an adhesive enhancer. In addition, Morflex® 150 can also be used as an ingredient in the production of organic peroxides commonly used as initiators to cure unsaturated polyesters.

In addition to acting as a co-plasticizer for polymeric vinyl chloride (PVC) materials, DCHP is also used as a non-blocking plasticizer. Insoluble in water, DCHP is considered a premiere ingredient for acrylic heat-seal and waterproof coatings used on roadways and airport runways. When used in ink and printing formulations, Morflex® 150 enhances ink adhesion across a range of substrates including paper, vinyl and textiles.

From a versatility perspective, Morflex® 150’s  transition from liquid to solid makes it an ideal candidate for heat or thermo-sensitive adhesives.  As a solid powder at room temperature, Morflex® 150 has a high melting point and can be used as a heat-activated plasticizer for heat seal applications and adhesive films that respond slowly to heat. It can be used in conjunction with phthalic anhydride, and is considered a principal ingredient in hot melt additives. In water-based adhesive systems, Morflex® 150 may be used as a delayed action heat sensitive tackifying agent.

Morflex® 150 may also be used in the manufacture of organic peroxides such as dibenzoyl peroxide. Organic peroxides are used as initiators to cure unsaturated polyesters for the composite industry as well as the crosslinking of rubber.

Many of the applications for DCHP have not been widely promoted to industry according to Vertellus Marketing Manager Prasad Taranekar. “The DCHP molecule has been trusted as an industry-proven product for more than 40 years largely based on its solvency attributes, adherence enhancing qualities and efficiency,” Taranekar said. “Vertellus is aiming to raise awareness of how this cost-effective chemistry can serve the performance and thermal needs of varied applications within diverse industries.” He added that Vertellus offers customers a secure supply of Morflex® 150, noting that the product is distributed globally in pails, drums, tote and bulk.

VERTELLUS TO DEBUT AT NPE2018 NEW TECHNOLOGIES FOR OPTIMIZING PLASTICS TO INCREASE SUSTAINABILITY AND COST SAVINGS

Indianapolis, IN. March 1, 2018 — Vertellus, a leading global supplier of additives to the plastics and polymer industries, will introduce at NPE 2018, May 7-11 in Orlando, Fla., two innovative technologies for driving increased use of recycled polyester in nylon resins (creating alloys) and enhancing the benefits of recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET). By enabling new alloys and compounds containing these recycled resins to deliver improved properties and processability, Vertellus’ new additive solutions – on display in booth #S10155 – will help compounders and OEMs boost sustainability and control costs without sacrificing performance.

The first new Vertellus technology to be highlighted at NPE 2018 is a novel compatibilizer for creating alloys of recycled polyester and nylon. This technology enables new materials with performance properties similar to those of virgin nylon, but with a significant cost advantage. Key properties are excellent impact strength, tensile strength and flexural modulus. Target applications for these polyester/nylon alloys include office furniture, sporting goods, automotive parts and textile fibers.

Vertellus will also showcase a novel, patent-pending technology for upgrading recycled PET and, potentially, bio-plastics such as polylactic acid (PLA). This new additive is expected to deliver higher clarity and better performance at lower dosages.

Also at NPE 2018, the company will discuss growing interest in enhanced co-polyester elastomers to meet the higher material demands for high performance automotive. Vertellus Morflex* 1129 dimethyl isophthalate intermediate for synthesizing polyesters increases flexibility and structural strength to address these requirements.

Vertellus Previews Freshstat™ Plus During In Cosmetics (London 2017)

Vertellus Previews Freshstat Plus™During In Cosmetics (London 2017)

New preservative technology delivers performance in liquid body washes and shampoos

(April 26, 2017, Indianapolis, Ind., USA) — Vertellus, a global manufacturer of fine and specialty chemicals, is introducing Freshstat PlusTM, a CPC-based (INCI: Cetylpyridinium Chloride) preservative, at In Cosmetics (London2017), April 4-6. The newest product development in the FreshstatTM family, Freshstat PlusTM has been especially designed as a preservative for anionic surfactant systems such as SLS and SLES.  The product contains proprietary technologies that naturally boost performance of FreshstatTM in surfactant-based systems, including shampoos and liquid body washes. These technologies allow Vertellus’ Freshstat PlusTM preservative system to address challenges commonly posed by select mold species in surfactant-based product formulations.

Introduced by Vertellus in 2015, FreshstatTM is an odorless, colorless liquid offering formulators a high degree of versatility due to its effectiveness across a broad pH range. Safety testing has shown that CPC is negative for skin sensitization potential and irritation at formulation levels up to 0.5 percent and CPC is widely used in a variety of leave-on and rinse-off personal care products. Vertellus representatives will be at In Cosmetics (London2017) to address developmental activity related to the technology and corresponding opportunities for formulators.

According to Anahita Lion, Vertellus’ Global Business Manager Personal Care, the introduction of Freshstat PlusTM responds to increasingly stringent ingredient standards set by regulatory bodies around the globe who oversee personal care products. “FreshstatTM and Freshstat PlusTM are free of parabens, phthalates, formaldehyde-releasing substances and Isothiazolinone, providing assurance to both formulators and consumers,” said Lion. “The FreshstatTM family of products work across a breadth of delivery systems – including surfactant-based systems – providing a simplified, practical approach to formulators looking for safe, effective ingredients.”

While the FreshstatTM product line is a newcomer to the market, the product line is based on CPC – a trusted ingredient used in oral health care products in the U.S., Europe and Japan for more than 40 years and approved by Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare as a cosmetic ingredient. Additionally, the European Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) finalized a favorable safety opinion for CPC as a cosmetic and oral care preservative at prescribed levels.

The FreshstatTM family of products is manufactured by Vertellus’ Zeeland, Michigan (USA) facility under cGMP, Kosher and Halal conditions. Additional information on FreshstatTM and FreshstatTM Plus will be available at stand Q61 during In Cosmetics (London2017), April 4-6.
