#1 Refined Castor Oil
#1 Refined Castor Oil is a technical grade castor oil, which has only received a coarse filtration. It is used in industrial applications, has the highest moisture content of these grades of oil, and is at times hazy.
Characteristics
- Clear, viscous, light color
- Non-drying and stable
- Lubricity and plasticization
- Penetration and surface wetting
- Pigment/dye dispersion
- Base compound for reactions
- Hydrophobic
Applications
Athletic & Sport Surfaces
#1 Refined Castor Oil is used on a variety of indoor & outdoor athletic surfaces. Examples include running tracks, tennis courts, basketball courts, and playground mats. #1 Refined Castor Oil provides environmental resistance, grip & rebound properties, durability, and is aesthetically pleasing.
Carpet Underlayment
#1 Refined Castor Oil is the ideal choice for sustainable rebond underlayment. It can be used with recycled polyurethane foam. #1 Refined Castor Oil functions as a natural moisture-resistant adhesive.
Memory Foam
#1 Refined Castor Oil is used for the production of medical and consumer memory foam products. Advantages of using #1 Refined Castor Oil (a plant-based polyol), in manufacturing polyurethane and its derivative foams include:
- Less (or no) VOCs (volatile organic compounds)
- Less degradation of the foam by moisture
Natural Mole Repellent
#1 Refined Castor Oil makes the food source and environment of burrowing moles smell and taste highly unpleasant. Castor oil is a safe and humane deterrent that causes moles and voles to leave the treated area in search of more suitable habitats.
Features
- Broad compatibility
- Natural based emollient
- Excellent pigment wetting and dispersing
- Provides slip, anti-block, and lubricating properties
- Oil & solvent resistance with thermal stability

Vertellus supplies a variety of castor oil grades the uses of which are dictated by acid value, moisture level, color, and purity. Castor oil is a triglyceride of fatty acids, with the fatty acid content being approximately 90% ricinoleic acid. Ricinoleic acid is an 18-carbon acid having a double bond in the 9-10 position and a hydroxyl group on the 12th carbon. Its remarkably constant composition, hydroxyl functionality, and unsaturation make it uniquely versatile as a naturally occurring compound.
While castor oil is available from several sources, regardless of origin, the chemical nature and composition are remarkably uniform. Typical values in the table below hold true for the Dry #1 Refined Castor Oil in the below table.
Typical Properties
Color (Gardner) | Acid Value | Hydroxyl Value | Saponification Value | Iodine Value | Viscosity (Stokes @25°C) | Specific Gravity | % Moisture | Refractive Index |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
3+ | 2 | 164 | 179 | 86 | 7.3 | 0.959 | 0.025 | 1.4773 |
