Although well known for its impact upon reaction speed, selectivity and allowing reactions to proceed where they would not otherwise occur in synthetic organic chemistry with commercial applications in pharma, agro and flavors and fragrances, DMAP also has commercial utility in several polymerisations.

The protection of various functionalities with acetate and tosylates, (and similar groups such as mesylates, benzoates, tritylates etc), is well known. In fact, treatment of amines and alcohols with acetic anhydride in the presence of a base, such as pyridine, has been a well established procedure since the turn of the 20th century.

DMAP is a good catalyst for acylation and has applications that require this type of reaction. In many antivirals, it also has uses in many other reactions such as Michael reactions, alkylation, amination, phosphorylation and many API's/AI's today use DMAP in the synthesis.

Today DMAP remains of significant commercial use and is a prime tool in most organic chemists arsenal for process optimisation and discovery. DMAP is used by e.g. innovator and generic API/AI and flavor & fragrances manufacturers in all regions of the world.
